- St. Johns night is called bonfire night because it is a custom of the Irish people to light bonfires in honour of St John. The bonfires are lit on St Johns Eve which falls on the twenty third of June. The fire is lit when it is getting dark. All the children dance, sing, and roar around it. The people also light a torch and follow the cattle with it and make the sign of the cross over them with it. Most bonfires are lit on the top of hills.
