  1. About one hundred and fifty years ago, during the Penal days, Priests wer not allowed to say mass in public, or in private, and only a very small number were allowed to remain in the country.
    Still, many Priests remained, at the risk og their lives and if they were captured by either soldiers or priest-hunters they were put to death
    A Priest from this parish was saying mass on the slopes of Slieve-na Mon, ona stone shaped like a stable, when his scouts came running and told him that the soldiers were on his track. The Priest departed, taking with him the Chalice and his Blackthorn stick.
    As he was crossing a stream he left his stick in the bank to help him across as he was jumping the stick broke in halves, leaving one half in his hand and the other half in the bank. The Priest escaped and next morning he was going to say ass he saw a bunch of roses growing around the stick
