- Loughkent Church
There is an old ruined Church in Loughkent. The name Loughkent or Kent's lake or lough is derived from a rich landowner or landlord named Kent who resided there during the middle ages but whose descendants are not to be traced in the locality now. The Church was situated about a half-mile from New Inn village and about ten miles north-west of Clonmel. It was supposed to be a well known monastery and at one time some hundreds of monks resided there. Geoffrey Keating is said to have paid frequent visits to the monastery. The ruins are now surrounded by a cemetery which contains about 3/4 of a acre of land. The two end walls of the church only remain standing now but the enclosed land is surrounded by a low stone wall.
After Oliver Cromwell had been defeated at the Siege of Clonmel he is said to have passed by this famous monastery on his way to Limerick. He decided to attack the monastery which contained some valuables(continues on next page)
