  1. There was once a landlord in this district who was very cruel. He had a number of tenants and he used charge them a very high rent for the land so that all the people were afriad of him. His name was Rev. Mr. Herbert. He used ride around on his horse collecting the rent, If he saw a pig a a horse or any other animal on the road he would ride on next morning and tell the owner to keep it in or if such things happened again he would increase the rent by about two shillings per week.
It was nearly all thatched houses the people lived in and if a pane of glass or any other repairs had to be done he would come and inspect the work and would charge very dearly for the repairs. The poor tenants were charged well for any comfort they enjoyed and the meaning of it all was to crush the spirit of its people.
