  1. There is an old abbey named Athassel on the banks of the Suir, about a half mile from the village of Golden. Many years ago there lived in it a man called "The Earl of Rue." He was very rich but very greedy. One day he refused a poor woman a drink, and she said she hoped he would not have a drink before she died. After some time he fell sick, and thinking on the woman's words he ordered his cellars to be filled with drink and said that he would not die of drought. He then told his servant to bring him a drink, and when she went to the cellar, all the casks were empty. He told her go to the river which was flowing near by, but she found this also dry. The Earl died during the night and the next morning it was found that the river had changed from one side of the Abbey to the other. This can be seen to the present day. In the graveyard adjoining it is to be seen cared in stone
