- About eighty years ago potatoes were taken for every meal during the year except in the early Summer, when potatoes were scarce. Porridge was then used for the evening meal which was taken about 8 o'clock when the day's work was done. Only three meals were taken and milk was drunk with each meal generally skim or butter milk. Butter was used also but meat was only taken on two or three days a week. While cabbage, turnips, and parsnips were each used in season, mashed up with cream, butter, or dripping. Drinking vessels were made of oak (called Nuggins) pewter mugs and pints made of tin. The two latter we scoured and polished until they shone like silver. When the family was large the table was placed in the center of the floor and all sat round it on wooden benches or chairs. A big pot of potatoes was thrown out on the table-cloth and the family sat and usually finished the lot. Ten years later bread was made from whole meal(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
