- In our district Wednesday is supposed to be the luckiest day to be married. Fridays and Saturdays are considered the unlucky days. Throwing old shoes after the bride and bridegroom are some of the customs. They are supposed to signify plenty. Shrove tide is the usual time for marrying especially Shrove Tuesday. June is considered the luckiest month in our district. In our district in bygone days Strawboys attended the marriage. These men had straw hats. They came to the marriages without any invitations and always got a welcome. They played musical instruments. The strawboys got th best of feed and the best of drink at th wedding. As time went on they became a nuisance and caused great trouble and inconvenience to the parties. They were shown that they were not welcome so the custom died out. The night of the wedding a dance is usually held and all neighbours are invited. It is a(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
