  1. On St. Bridgets Eve a piece of ribbon is taken out before dark and shaken three times in honour of God, the Blessed Virgin and St. Bridget. Then it is hung on a tree near the house and before Rosary time it is brought in This is called "brat Brighde" and is a cure for a headache.
    On St Patricks Day shamrock is worn by everyone both young and old. The shamrock is plucked the evening before and put in water for the night. In olden times the girls wore home-made crosses with green ribbons on them. It is a very old custom that all the men drink on that day to drown the shamrock.
    Shrove is the time for match-making and marriages and anyone that intends getting married do so during this time. Shrove begins at Christmas and end on Ash Wednesday.
    On Shrove Tuesday night pan-cakes are made and there is great feasting in every house to prepare for the seven weeks of fast during lent.
    Ash Wednesday was a day of black fast in olden times. The people would not drink tea with sugar or milk on it on that day.
    The first Sunday in Lent is known as 'Chalk Sunday' and the unmarried people who are of an age to marry are chalked on the back on that day; sometimes their ages
