There is an old superstition that it is lucky for the bride to have "something old and something new, something borrowed and something blue".
people sometimes throw an old shoe after the wedding party for good luck. May and August are supposed to be unlucky months for marrying and Thursday the unlucky day. There is an old rhyme which says
Monday for health
Tuesday for wealth
Wednesday the best day of all
Thursday for losses
Friday for crosses
and Saturday no luck at all
