    The existence of a Parish Priest in Newport begins with the year 1704. After the siege of Limerick and the flight of the "Wild Geese", the courage of our people in their opposition to the Penal Laws failed for a time. With the accession to the English throne of Queen Anne, new laws against Catholics were enacted and all existing laws rigidly enforced. The resistence of the people, however forced the Government, in 1703 to give a kind of toleration to Parish Priests. By registering at the nearest Assizes, and giving certain guarantees, they were not forced to leave the country. Perhaps because of this arrangement, we first first of a Parish Priest in Newport in 1704. He was Rev. D. O'Connell and was given charge of the parishes of Kilvellane, and Kilnerath
