- In the making of barrels they put a plane between their legs and planed of the staves. Then they put it on the ground and put tress hoops on it. These hoops kept it tight while the iron hoops were being put on. When they came to the other end of the barrel they had to nail on the tress hoops or the staves would not keep together. There was a limekiln at the Tontines. A load of turf used be put into the hole in the ground and set on fire, and then big stones of lime were thrown in on the fire.
