The “shepherd's purse” got its name from the shape of its seed-pods. In the time when wolves roamed through the country shepherds used to tie a bundle of these flowers round the necks of their sheep as they believed that the wolves would not then see the sheep.
An herb known as garlic when chewed is thought to be a cure for a toothache.
The dandelion is composed of a great many tiny flowers growing together. Its long narrow leaves are cut into notches the points of which are turned backwards. They are like big teeth hence the name “dandelion” is formed from French words that mean “lion's teeth”.
