There are many old proverbs used locally.
Shandrum I dread you -
This is how this old saying had its origin. Many years ago a farmer in this district having several acres of hay to save, arose early one morning. The sky was getting cloudy. The wind was blowing from the direction of Shandrum.
In despair he cried “Shandrum I dread you.”
Other proverbs are
1. “I doubt it” said Croker.
2. A little charity to the living is worth a wagon load of flowers to the dead.
3. The best hurler is always on the ditch.
Every dog is stiff (one) at his own door.
4. You can't break an old dog of his trot.
5. It is a bad wind that does not blow good for some one.
6. Breeding breaks out through the eyes of a cat.
7. Don't put off till tomorrow the song you can sing to-day.
8. A good beginning is half the work.
9. A rolling stone gathers no moss.
