  1. At the time of the Penal Laws the Irish priests had a very hard time from the English soldiers. The soldiers used to raid the monasteries and kill the priests.
    There were caves and tunnels under many of the monasteries and the priests used sometimes escape with their treasures through these.
    Once some soldiers were raiding Askeaton Abbey in search of the Franciscan monks who were living there unknown to the authorities for a long time. On going through the monastery the soldiers saw a monk disappearing through sort of trap-door in the floor. When they opened this door they found that it led to an underground cave or tunnel and they decided to search this.
