  1. Travelling Folk
"Travelling folk," meaning tinkers and tramps, still call to houses around the country, and in the villages for charity. In the villages, people give them a penny, but in the country houses, flour, potatoes, eggs, and other foods are given to them. They generally sell the flour and potatoes cheap to certain people in the village that needed them.
When receiving alms, the poor of long ago, always said some prayers for the donors, or for the donors' dead relations. Prayers such as these:- "May the Lord have mercy on all the dead belonging to you," or "May God prosper you," or "May God Almighty increase and multiply your means." Today, the poor merely say "Thank you" without any prayers attached. It is a pity that the old time way has changed.
The names of some of the travelling people, who went around here years ago, were Cartys, Caseys, O'Briens, Sheridans, Faulkners, Purcells. people bearing these names sill go around.
They nearly always stayed within the poor class of people in small houses, and never stayed longer than a night or two.
