   My home is situated in the Fermoy townland, and it is also situated in the Parish of Fermoy and the Barony of Barrymore. There are about thirty-five or forty families in the Fermoy townland and some of the most common family names are - Roches, Walshes, Fitzgeralds. There are many old men living in this locality and one of the oldest of them is Mr. Flannigan. He lives very near my home and he has a shop across the road from my house. That is a sign that this is a very healthy locality. They are not so good at speaking Irish, as this was not an Irish-speaking district. This townland is a very modern townland. It owes its origin to John Anderson, a Glasgow merchant, bought the land around here about one hundred and forty years ago. At this time the Government was looking for a site to build a Barracks. Anderson offered to sell a site at a cheaper rate and two Barracks were built and after a while the town grew up around them. The territory around Fermoy was in possesion of the O'Keeffes, O'Duggans, and O'Lehanes before the arrival of the Normans. The O'Keeffes and O'Duggans on the North side of the Blackwater and the O'Lehanes (Ó Liatháin)
