  1. The local land-lords were Captain Evans and Mr. Bowen. They were said to be good landlords, and though the rents were high the landlords were not unduly harsh. Neither the landlords nor their agents exercised any special powers over their tenants. Mr Barry who lived in Kilbolane Castle before the O'Hannegans would not allow the poor to pick a stick off his land; he was a magistrate and was harsh to the local people if he got an opportunity of taking them to court for a slight offence.
    Tithes were collected long ago from the tenants. They were often paid in kind instead of money. Tithes are still paid out of one town-land called Hardingville near the village of Milford. The occupants of the farms in Hardingville are the OCallaghans and the OMahoneys. There is no account of an eviction in this district.
