- Some people would always have their potatoes set for St. Patrick's day. They thought it unlucky if they were not set before the cuckoo came. The three first days of April are called "Riach Days". These days are very unlucky as regards cows. One year a long time ago there was a very wet March and a certain cow was kept in during this month. When April came the cow said she would stay out and give no thanks to March.March got angry and borrowed three days from April. At this time the cow was out in a field near the river. All at once the sky became overcast and the rain came down in torrents. The river swelled and swelled until it overflowed its banks. In the morning the cow was found drowned. Long ago people would not like to let out their cows during these days. Now however this ancient custom is rarely observed.
