    And in this Cloister by the wave
    The Monks with locks of hoar
    Toiled day by day with loving hearts
    Upon old Erin’s lore.
    And well they rescued from the gloom
    The annals of the Gael,
    May God’s bright glory crown their souls
    Brave Monks of Innisfail

    And to this Abbey holy came
    Fair youths across the foam,
    From Gaul and Greece, and Saxon land,
    And some from distant Rome,
    To kindle at its glorious shrine
    The torch of Knowledge bright
    And backward to their far-off homes
    To bear the beacon light.

    But darkness came upon our isle-
    Black Cromwell trod the land,
    And Ruin’s fire blazed luridly
    From Church and Abbey grand.
    And that great shrine of Irrelagh
    In crumbling ruins lay,
    And with its Monks were dead and gone –
    Were dead and passed away.
