The people of Abbeymahon used to buy reed from Barry's-Point people. There is a special needle used for thatching, also a special yarn and "scoilb" are used. These are made from furze sticks which are cut to a special length, and are pointed sharply at each end, and are warmed to the fire in order to bend them slightly.
