Songs (ar lean)
“TD Sullivan wrote a poem on Timoleague Abbey when it was sacked by the Cromwellian troops.”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)McDermody's translation of Seán Ó Coileain's poem on Timoleague AbbeyAbroad one night in loneliness I strolled
along the care work beach my footsteps lay.
Struggling the while with sorrows yet untold,
Yielding to cares that wore my strength away
On as I moved my wayward musing ran
Oer the strange turns, that mark the fleeting life of man.II
The little stars shone sweetly in the sky,
Not one faint murmur rose from sea or shore
The wind with silent wing went slowly by
As though some secret on its path it bore.
All? all was calm, tree, flower and shrub stood still.
And the soft moonlight slept in valley and on hill. III
Slowly and sadly oer my path of pain
I wandered idly brooding oer my woes
'till full before me on that fare stretched plain
A ruined abbey's mouldering walls arose.
Where far from crowds, and courts and courtly crimes
The sons of virtue dwelt, the boast of other times(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
