- Around 1858 this district, though using coal in small quantities depended mostly on furze - cut and withered, turf which is only the top sod of marshy ground and the droppings of animals when dried by the sun called "tourán". When occasion required furze to be used in damp or green state, it gave off much smoke which entered every portion of the house leaving a smoky smell on clothes etc. The fire was extinguished when not required.
