    Famous stronghold of the Barrys.
    Castle Freke, than which there are few nobler specimens of castellated architecture, may be just numbered among the stately houses of Ireland. It is built on the site of Rathbarry Castle, the famous stronghold and residence of the Barrys, on the southern coast of Cork near ancient cathedral town of Rosscarbery and about four miles, W.S.W. from Clonakilty on the road from Cork to Skibbereen.
    The erection of Castle Freke was begun about the year 1794. Originally it had no pretensions to beauty but about the year 1812
