- (continued from previous page)taken by surprise. In the confusion, the resourceful and quick-witted outlaw made good his escape, sergeant in the company of soldiers seeking to capture the outlaw. The sergeant had boasted so much of his ability to get Sean Rua with a bullet "could but I get a glimpse arranged with the outlaw to hold a trial of skill. The contest took place in Macroom before hundreds of spectators and soldiers. The open blade of a knife as a target was placed in position by Sean Rua and the sergeant barely missed the mark but so deadly accurate was the aim of Sean Rua that he made halves of the bullet on the edge of the blade, and in the next minute he disappeared in the crowd and was soon away to Iveleary before sergeant of soldiers had time to recover from his chagrin.
