"Peppermint tea", made at home, was a favourite drink. They also drank whey made from sour milk or biestings; skim milk or sweet milk and water was the usual drink for working men. Knives and forks were very scarce but people managed very well with their fingers. Earthenware basins and plates were used.
Tin ware was fairly common and saucepans, mugs etc. were to be seen in most houses.
People looked forward to Christmas very much, when they had unusual food, such as meat, cakes, tea, apples, etc.
