  1. (continued from previous page)
My loving wife she came to me and this much did she say
John my boy, hold up your head undaunted do not be
For its better to die for Ireland's right than to live in slavery.

    (IV)
And I said my darling girl it breaks my heart to part with you
Also my young and tender babes alas what will they do
Likewise my friends and relatives they will mourn my sad downfall
But to part with you my native land it grieves me more than all.

    (V)
When I received my sentence in strong irons I was bound
While numbers of my countrymen assembled all around
They offered me my liberty if I would forsake the cause
But I'd rather die a a thousand times than submit to Saxon Laws.
