Then they steeped the peeled rushes in the melted fat and left them soaking in it for about fifteen minutes. In many houses through-out the country at the present time Rush Candles are used on the Twelfth Night.
This is how they are used:- First, a cake is made by mixing cowdung and ashes together into a stiff mixture like dough. The dough was made into a round shape like a cake and put on an old shovel or piece of board. Next twelve rush candles, each about three inches long were got and placed in the dough.
