  1. 1; A numerous families in this district is the Moore-family. They were some of them famous butter-makers. One of the most famous now living is Mrs Michael Delaney Shrahane Mountrath. She was a Mary Ellen Moore of Gurteen( sister of Rody's, Peter's and Jim's. Her mother was even more famoud still. I know they were able to put by firkins of butter. I think they were known as Dairy Maid No 1 and Dairy Maid No 2.
2; The present Mrs Rody Moore Gurteen. (Torc-na-Méala) was a Nora Phelan, of Bacca, Mountrath. She is another great butter-maker and now her daughter. Philomena Moore, Gurteen has taken up Dairy Farming
3; At Mrs "Mary Ann" Phelan's, Bacca (now supposed to be on her dying bed) they used a horse or two to churn the butter. This was always done at the home of the Chambers Whitefields and also at the house of Mrs Nora Phelan who was a Miss Tierney of Barr..
