Firoda (Fíoghair Ua Duach), is a townland...

Firoda (Fíoghair Ua Duach), is a townland extending from about 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 miles to the North West of Castlecomer town. It extends to the boundary between Cos Kilkenny and Laoighis, and from ths boundary (Fíoghair) derives its name. It is divided into two - Upper and Lower Firoda. Lower Firoda is never called that by the older people; it is and has been called Glenmagoo. (The older inhabitants never refer to it except as Glenmagoo.) Nothing is known traditionally of the making of the boundary between the two counties, or of the circumstances surrounding it.
Skehana bounds Firoda on the North East. A glen, through portion of which a little stream flows, separates the townlands. According to tradition the name means 'Sgeachana'. The 'sgeach' bushes for which it was once noted, as distinct from Firoda, where they are rather sparce.
Mayhora - Sounded by the older people as Ma-thúra (phonetic). Tradition has it that it derives its name from "The place of the Spinning-wheels." This locality bounds Skehana on the side farthest from Firoda.
