- Houses in the olden days were very small, with only two rooms and a kitchen which had thatched roofs. A bed was sometimes screened-off from the kitchen and this was called a settle-bed and it was made of wood.
The fire-place was in the centre of the kitchen and the chimneys were built of clay and stone. Holes served as windows in most of those houses. The doors were mostly half-doors. Balls made of slack served as fuel for fires. Candles made of tallow and rushes were the only means of light in those houses.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
