from the tallow of the cows they used to kill. This tallow was cut into small pieces and melted in an iron pot or oven. It was stirred occasionally with a piece of timber. It was then strained into a jug. An iron mould or shape was stuck in a soft sod of turf. The wick was made from pieces of cotton thread. There was a hole in the bottom of the mould and the wick was pulled through the hole. A loop was made at the other end and a nail was put through this loop and placed across the mouth of the mould. The melted tallow was poured into the mould. When the tallow was set the nail was useful when pulling out the candle.
