- In the old days travelling folk were familiar in every district. There was the rag man, who called with his wares in the form of pins and needles. He collected rags and horse hair, in return for which he handed over a sheet of pins and a packet of needles. There were also the thread man, the cake woman, and the pedlar. The latter had his wares in a large basket. These consisted of pens, pencils, hand balls, tin whistles and other articles. This man was very welcome especially with the boys, on account of what he sold. The cake woman and thread man also carried their goods in large baskets(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
