- The famine times of 1846 to 1848 was a severe time for the Irish people. When the potato crop failed the peasants used nothing but Indian meal. Some of them could not afford to buy it as it was too deer at half a crown per stone.
When they were really hungry they would go and stop the train by standing on the line with a red flag in their hands. The driver would give a pound and then make a collection from the other workmen on the train. The wages in those days were three to four pence per day.
