    throughout the many years of his reign of terror. When his parents died he inherited the York Hotel- a concern which flourished under the famous "Sam Gray's Signboard". On each side of which was an oil painting, showing King William on his white charger, surmounted by the slogan "No Surrender, Gray 1690". This famous signboard was destroyed during the troubled time of 1920, it was then the property of one Patrick Fealy, a cousin of Gerneral Eoin O Duffy. This infamous man Sam Gray gathered around him a band of cut-throats, who stopped at nothing once Sam gave the word of command. In Sam's heyday, no person could pass through the town without a written permit from him. He committed innumerable murders and crimes of violence, but was always acquitted by a "packed jury" of his own followers, until he committed the inevitable mistake of ill treating one of his right-hand men
