- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)When salmon are going up stream they jump from the pool to the top of the rock. Many times they fail to reach the top without making several efforts. When a salmon fails to reach the top he drops down but does not follow the course of the water spout. He drops perpendicularly as indicated in the diagram and bounds back into the pool to try again.
A wine net shaped like a fire-guard put in the position marked x makes a prisoner of the fish and considerable judgement is required to work it with success. If the river was low the net will project into the water and prevent the salmon from jumping as he will hit against it. By narrowing the width of the stream on top of the cascade the flow of water can be kept clear of the top of the net. The stream is narrowed by introducing heavy stones at the sides.The "Strokeawl."
This consists of three large salmon hooks tied together and pointing in different directions. There is a ring where they join and a substantial line is tied to this.
