  1. My Townland
    Ballymote, the town in which I live is in the parish of Emlaghfad in the Barony of Corran. The town derives its name from a moat which surrounds the Old Castle - Baile An Mora which means the town of the moat.
    There is a hill in the centre of the town which is usually termed the rock and from this the streets slope down in various directions to the level ground. There is only one mill now here for grinding corn and meal while a long time ago there were two, a flax-mill and a corn-mill. There is nothing now left to mark the place where the flax mill stood but a few rocks and stones.
    Weaving was also carried on here and Fitzmaurice who owned the castle in 1750 brought down linen-weavers from the North and established the linen-trade here until forty years ago.
    The houses in the town are now all slated houses but forty or fifty years ago every house was a small, thatched cottage. A number of new houses are still being built and the County Council
