Ar an leathanach seo

  1. Long ago there were no creameries and every family churned the milk at home.
    Some had a little house called a dairy for the purpose.
    People who had a great number of cows did the work by horse-power. In their dairy they had a machine the wheels of which were settled down under the ground.
    This was worked by a horse which was joined to the machine by a strong rope and driven round and round quickly outside the door.
    The remains of some of these machines are to be seen at Feeneys in Carnamadow, Grange, Sligo. and at Mrs. Mc Gowan's in Gornadrung, Grange, Sligo.
    Most people used churns with dashes. The churn was usually about 4 feet height and 2 ft. wide in the bottom. It was made of oak and had a round shape. The cover it had was a little lid in which was a hole for the dash to go up and down. To keep the milk from coming up, a little coppin with a hole was put down on the dash and
