    In olden times people wore clogs, brogues, spatters, the clogs were made of hard leather, and the soles were made of wood, the soles were got ready made, and they tacked the soles and uppers together. In String and in harsh weather, they would wear spatters. Spatters were made by the women, they were long stockings made of pure wool, and drawn up to the knees. Brogues were made by the village shoe-maker and they were something like the boots nowadays, but they were stronger, and not as well finished.
