  1. (continued from previous page)
housewife who spent all day churning and could not get any butter. After a time a ploughman came in to light his pipe and she told him she could not make the butter. He went out to get the sock of the plough and he put it into the fire. After a time a woman came in and said her hands were burned. When the housewife looked into the churn it was full of butter. It is said that it is very bad luck to light a pipe while churning is going on.
Buttermilk is used for making homemade bread. It is also used for making whey. Fresh buttermilk is a very refreshing drink
