There was a man named Scanion, a water keeper on the eel weirs at Cliffe, Ballyshannon. He and another man were night watchmen for a period of over ten years. After supper which they usually had about 11.30 Scanion’s companion went off for a sleep while Scanion himself continues to keep watch. As the clock struck twelve a door opened and a lady entered. She was tall, fair, with a long thin face, one prominent tooth, was dressed in a brown costume and brown shoes. She did not speak but stood looking at him for two minutes and then she backed out of the house without turning and the door closed after her. Scanion was very frightened. He knew it was impossible to get to the weir house through the treacherous river without the aid of a boat.
