About twenty three years ago sugar sticks were made in Clonea by a woman named Mrs Brett. She used to get brown sugar, water, peppermint, vinegar a small bit of butter and put them to boil in a pot. She used to leave this on a small brand she had for the purpose. When boiled she use to spread on a griddle to cool. Then she used to put a bit on a plate drawn on a crook so as to make brown streaks on the sticks she used to roll them and cut into lengths and sell them. Her daughter Mrs Halpin, Moominane Clonea has the brand and griddle still.
