  1. Hedge schools existed in several parts of this district. Two of the last hedge schools around here were open at the same time. One of them in Eskeragh and the other one in Dooleg.
    There was no local name for the hedge school. It was called after the teacher such as Miss Coleman's school. The one I am going to describe was only a few yards behind Eskeragh bridge on the road to Belmullet. It was about ten yards in off the road-side. The school was on John Holmes land.
