1. Care of the Feet

   The people began to wear shoes about a hundred years ago. Before that they wore shoes much like soles of shoes, with straps accross their feet. Children at present go bare footed in Summer. Before washing the feet the water is warmed and washing soda is put in it. Boots are repaired locally. There are no shoemakers nearer than Crossmolina. John Mac Nulty was a shoemaker in former times. This had not been a tradition in families. Clogs were not made locally. They never are worn now. Leather was not made in the district. Foot covering were used. They were made from the hides of animals. Foot coverings were made from sheep skin. Long ago.
   Long ago the people did not wear shoes until they were nineteen years. Some people never wore shoes except when going to Mass and going to town. At present, the children go barefoot for four or six months of the year in the summer time. The water is thrown away after the feet is washed. There are no
