- Stories of giants and Warriors
at the present day giants are not so common in Ireland as they were in the olden times. There is an account of a giant who could start on the top of a hill near Croagh Patrick and speak to another giant in the island of Achill, asking him if the potatoes were boiled for his dinner. Then his sight was so strong that the potatoes were strained he could see the steam rising from them as they lay on the basket. A hop, step and a leap would then land him in Achill. The hope would bring him to Oldhead, the step to a rock north of Clare Island and the leap to Achill Head. The potatoes were as big as large turnips and the skins of them were big enough for the birds to build their nests in them. We do not suppose that such people still exist in any part of Ireland.
There lives a witch in County Galway and people go to her for instructions about certain things. For instance, there is a story told about a man in the west of Mayo who built a new house and when he went to live in it his sheep and cattle died and the world seemed to go completely against him. friend of his told him to(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
