- In the days of our forefathers, people as a rule did not begin to wear shoes at the early age they do now. Of course different people started to wear shoes at different ages according to health and other circumstances but the poor who were strong and healthy enough to go barefoot did not get boots until they were full grown, and there are even accounts of people who never covered their feet with anything heavier than wollen stockings. These stockings were made without any soles. They were kept in place by a loop on the upper part to put in on the middle toe. This footwear went by the name "trochghchín". They wore these trochghchíní in the months of February and March. They were not worn to keep out the cold but to save their feet from what they called ? . The feet used to crack with the cold weather and these stockings were a great protection.
There is scarcely anything known of these things at the present day as nearly all children start to wear shoes at a very early age, almost from the time they start(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
