The faction fights all started over two bulls at a fair in Emly (See p53 supra)
For years at every fair & meeting or races the different parties used to wheel against one another & then the ructions started. "He is a 2 year old", some one would say "He is near 3 years old up agin him" And then the whole fair would be on one círan poc while you'd be cracking a match.
There was many boy (30 or 40 year old!) getting ready for a faction fight. He had the "loader butt" ready & was practising on the floor the night before, when his father challenged him. They fell at it hammer and tongs & whatever skelp the old fellow gave his son, he knocked the black-thorn out of his hand. "Elbow, weak point. You have to guard it better!.
"Take hold of this stick" says she to me", until I show you how to hold a black-thorn in a free faction fight. By jonnies, I know you hold it wrong. Dont let your thumb over to the other fingers. Place your thumb up along the stick & then it can be knocked out of your hand".
