- My father who is 76 years of age made candles about 50 years ago. Whenever a cow or sheep was killed in the neighbourhood he got the tallow and rendered it in a tin dish. He bought the wicks and hung them on a stick. This was called "hanking".
Then the wicks were dipped in the tallow and then left to harden when they got another coating. The dipping was repeated until they were as thick as an ordinary candle. My father had a mould to shape the candles. He made candles for the neighbours.
These candles were rather dirty and had to be "snuffed" every now and again. They(continues on next page)- Collector
