  1. There was a farmer living in Kilgarvan several years ago, and he was very poor. He had to go up to the north every year working. The bargain was that he should stay until the cuckoo would speak in the orchard below the house and if he got tired of his master, he should cut the ears off him, and if the master got tired of him, the servant boy should cut the ears off him.
