- Browne's Castle. The ruins of an old castle can still be seen in the village of Mount Brown parish of Aughagower and county of Mayo. It is the remains of Sir John Browns Castle. It was built of stones red brick, and mortar. The mantel boards were made with white marble. At the entrance to the hall door there were ten steps of cut stone. There were two beautiful trees growing one each side of the hall door. They were over twenty feet in height. The castle was five storey high. There were four storey over(continues on next page)
