  1. There is the remains of a hedge school in the land of David Hayes, Grange, in the parish of Castletownroche. The name of the school master was Hegarty. There were thirteen children going to the school. They had no pens or paper they wrote on slate. The school master lodged in the houses around the school every night. He had free board and lodging. The scholars had to pay him. There was no Irish taught in this school. It was an old tatched school.
